chapter 2 :
Dress is a universal language which has evolved throughout history, to reflect the multifaceted conglomerate that is the fashion industry. Stepping outside the rapid cyclic nature of the fashion industry Archive: Chapter 2 is designed through a combination of practical and theoretical research. Drawing inspiration from 1960’s Chelsea girl and the expansive lifestyle garments were required to lead. Archive: Chapter 2 considers the symbolism applied to ‘classic’ archetypes and the disruption of meaning caused by non-traditional design. Design centred around flat pattern making as a slow methodology allowing the interconnection of garment archetypes and signifiers not replicable in industrial settings. Combining traditional suiting textiles with light weight knits and silk blends, monochromatic garments are produced. Subverting specific archetypes and misplacing garment signifiers places Archive Chapter 2 between contemporary and historical fashion systems, creating alternate interpretations of dress.

line - up
Originating as a project spanning six garments each developed from a simple, timeless shift mini inspired by designers Mary quant and Pierre Cardin. Before layering collars, cuffs, lapels and hemlines until the minimal shift was transformed through the interconnection of signifiers and archetypes. The complete line-up, front and back shows A001, A003 & A004, (physically produced) alongisde other garments utilising similar archetypes and signifiers. Translated into 2D by manipulating line and tone the collection is achromatic barring A004 a point of stark contrast, allowing texture, textiles and shape to be the most crucial elements in creating the dress of Archive : Chapter 2.
